    Understanding LIC Health Shield

Hospital discharge should bring relief to the family budget too

An awareness blog on LIC’s Health Shield Plan 907
By Deepak V. Lala | Your Financial Planning Partner | 9167082947

    Dear Reader

Imagine a gentleman returning home after a week in hospital. His friend asks, “How are you feeling?” He smiles: “Physically, much better!” Then he adds, “Financially, I am still recovering.” His Mediclaim has settled the eligible hospital bill, but his home loan EMI, school fees and everyday household expenses have continued throughout his illness.

This is an illustrative story, but the question is practical: while you concentrate on getting well, what will support your family’s cash flow? A hospital bill is only one part of the financial pressure an illness can create.

Two different roles in one protection plan

Think of Mediclaim as protection for eligible medical bills and a fixed-benefit policy as an additional financial cushion. LIC’s Health Shield pays defined benefits for qualifying events, irrespective of actual treatment costs. It complements Mediclaim; it does not replace it. [1]

A family may need money for travel, a relative’s stay, help at home or routine commitments while earnings are interrupted. A benefit payment can help with such needs. This does not mean the policy separately reimburses each of these expenses or guarantees replacement of lost income.

    What Health Shield provides

Health Shield is a non-linked, non-participating, pure-risk health plan. Its policy term is 15 years, with guaranteed premiums during the term. Eligible spouses, children and parents can be included under the policy, subject to eligibility and underwriting. There is no maturity benefit. [1]

Benefits are calculated using the Applicable Daily Benefit, or ADB. Qualifying non-ICU hospitalisation pays one ADB per eligible day; ICU pays twice ADB. The Major Surgical Benefit sum assured equals 100 times ADB. Listed surgeries pay 20%, 40%, 60% or 100% of that amount. [1, 2]

    A simple illustration

Assume an ADB of ₹5,000. The Major Surgical Benefit sum assured is ₹5 lakh. These are alternative surgery categories, not benefits added together for one operation. [1, 2]

    20%

    ₹1,00,000

    40%

    ₹2,00,000

    60%

    ₹3,00,000

    100%

    ₹5,00,000

Hospital cash may be payable additionally for an eligible stay. Actual entitlement depends on the procedure, admission duration, waiting periods, exclusions and remaining benefit limits. These figures are illustrations, not a claim quotation. [1, 2]

    Support beyond major surgery

The plan also includes benefits for specified day care procedures, other eligible surgeries, certain medical conditions and extended hospitalisation. A No Claim Benefit can increase ADB after qualifying claim-free periods. [1]

For eligible Category 1 or 2 surgery at listed network hospitals, Quick Cash offers a 50% advance of the eligible surgical benefit. It is adjusted against the claim and is not full cashless hospital-bill settlement. [2]

Understand the conditions before you buy

There is generally a 90-day sickness waiting period and a two-year specific waiting period for listed treatments; accident provisions differ. Annual and lifetime limits apply. Disclose medical history fully and read the exclusions and policy schedule. [2]

A message for families and employers

For families, the useful question is not simply, “Do we have insurance?” Ask, “Which expenses will our existing cover meet, and what financial pressure would remain?” Review your emergency fund, Mediclaim and additional protection together before deciding.

Employers can also start this conversation with their teams: would an illness leave an employee worrying about both recovery and the next month’s household expenses? Any employer-sponsored arrangement should be checked with LIC before implementation.

My aim is to help you understand the role of each policy and choose protection that suits your family and budget. Let us review what you already have and identify whether an additional cushion would be useful.
